The Lake Como & Lake Lugano Loop

The Lake Como & Lake Lugano Loop is a stunning cross-border cycling itinerary connecting two of the most iconic lakes in northern Italy and southern Switzerland. Designed for road bikes, this route combines scenic lakeside roads, rolling inland sections, and numerous panoramic viewpoints, offering a rich and varied riding experience between Lombardy and Ticino.

With a total distance of approximately 85 km and around 800 meters of elevation gain, the route is particularly suited to riders looking for a longer outing with spectacular views. A solid level of fitness is recommended. Maintaining a steady pace and including a few stops, the loop can be completed in around 3 hours and 30 minutes or enjoyed over half a day.

Starting Point & Access

The loop starts and finishes in Mendrisio, at Ciclosprint — a well-known meeting point for cyclists and a bike shop located next to the Mendrisio San Martino railway station. The route can be started from any point, but for practical reasons we indicate Mendrisio as the official starting location.

The starting point is easily accessible:

  • By train, including international connections

  • By car, with several public parking areas and parking garages within a 1 km radius

This makes the route particularly convenient for visitors staying in Lugano, the Mendrisiotto region, or nearby northern Italy.

Route Description

From Mendrisio, the route heads south towards the Italian border, gradually approaching Lake Como. The first major lakeside town is Cernobbio, known for its elegant villas and lakeside promenade. This first section already offers beautiful views across the lake.

Continuing north along the western shore of Lake Como, the route reaches Carate Urio, a quiet and charming village where the road runs very close to the water.

The ride then continues towards Menaggio, one of the most iconic towns on Lake Como and the natural halfway point of the route. With its open lake views and scenic waterfront, Menaggio is the ideal place for a longer break.

Leaving Lake Como, the route heads inland before reconnecting with Lake Lugano near Porlezza, a lively border town. From here, the road follows the eastern shore of Lake Lugano, heading north through panoramic sections towards Lugano, before finally returning to Mendrisio.
