Ghisallo & Muro di Sormano

The Ghisallo & Muro di Sormano loop is a magnificent cross-border cycling route that passes through some of the most iconic landmarks in the history of cycling: Lake Como, Bellagio, Ghisallo, and the legendary Muro di Sormano.

With approximately 110 km and over 2,100 meters of elevation gain, the route can be completed in around 4h30 and offers several opportunities to stop and admire the landscape — or enjoy a well-deserved coffee break. It is a demanding itinerary recommended for well-trained riders.

Starting Point & Access

The loop starts and finishes in Mendrisio, at Ciclosprint — a well-known meeting point for cyclists and bike shop located next to the Mendrisio San Martino railway station. The ride can be started from any point, but for practical reasons Mendrisio is indicated as the official starting location.

The starting point is easily accessible:

  • By train, including international connections

  • By car, with several public parking areas and parking garages within a 1 km radius

This makes the route particularly convenient for visitors staying in Lugano, the Mendrisiotto region, or nearby northern Italy.

Route Description

From Mendrisio, the route heads south towards the Italian border, gradually approaching Lake Como. The first major lakeside town is Cernobbio, known for its elegant villas and lakeside promenade. This opening section already offers impressive lake views.

Continuing south along the western shore, the route reaches Como, crossing the city before taking the inner branch of Lake Como towards Bellagio. This stretch is rolling and scenic, with narrow roads passing through picturesque villages.

From Bellagio, the route turns towards Madonna del Ghisallo, an iconic climb featured in the Giro di Lombardia and the Giro d’Italia. At the summit stands the cyclists’ sanctuary and the Museo del Ciclismo Madonna del Ghisallo — a symbolic landmark for cycling enthusiasts worldwide.

The route then descends towards Canzo before turning right in the direction of Muro di Sormano. The climb begins at a manageable gradient before reaching the legendary “Muro” section — one of the steepest paved climbs in professional cycling, with gradients exceeding 25%.

After Sormano, the loop reconnects with the Lake Como area before heading inland and eventually towards Lake Lugano near Porlezza. From there, the road follows the eastern shore of Lake Lugano northwards towards Lugano, before returning to Mendrisio.
