Starting point & access

The Muggio Valley Tour is a short but demanding road cycling route that explores the traditional villages of the Valle di Muggio, the southernmost valley in Switzerland. Far from the busy lakeside roads, this route offers a quieter and more rural riding experience, characterized by narrow roads, chestnut forests, and stone-built villages.

With a distance of approximately 40.5 km and around 1,000 meters of elevation gain, this loop is more challenging than the lakeside routes. It is particularly suited to experienced cyclists, cycle tourists looking for a tougher ride, and those who appreciate long climbs combined with strong local character.

Starting point & access

The loop starts and finishes in Mendrisio, at Ciclosprint — a well-known meeting point for cyclists and a bike shop located next to the Mendrisio San Martino railway station. The route can be started from any point, but for practical reasons we indicate Mendrisio as the official starting location.

The starting point is easily accessible:

  • By train, including international connections

  • By car, with several public parking areas and parking garages within a 1 km radius

This makes the route particularly convenient for visitors staying in Lugano, the Mendrisiotto region, or nearby northern Italy.

Route description

Leaving Mendrisio, the route quickly exits the urban area and begins climbing towards the Valle di Muggio. The first ascent through Morbio Superiore and Castel San Pietro offers a steady and progressive climb. The road then continues towards Sagno, one of the most characteristic villages in the valley. This section runs along narrow roads through wooded areas, with open views stretching towards the Po Valley. Once in Sagno, you return along the same road to reconnect with the main valley road.

Riders who wish to reduce the total elevation gain can skip the out-and-back section to Sagno and continue directly along the main valley road. This variant shortens the route and removes a significant portion of climbing, while still preserving the essence of the Valle di Muggio experience.

Back on the main valley road, the terrain becomes progressively more rolling and hilly as you move deeper into the valley. This section requires careful pacing, as short climbs and descents follow one another without long recovery stretches.

Beyond Muggio, the road turns towards Roncapiano. The final 3 km are particularly steep and represent one of the most demanding sections of the entire route. Roncapiano is a dead-end road, so once you reach the village, you return along the same stretch.

After rejoining the main valley axis, the route continues towards Cabbio. Here, the character of the ride changes abruptly: a right turn leads into a very steep and technical descent, dropping quickly down the opposite side of the valley. This section requires solid bike handling skills, especially in shaded areas or on damp asphalt.

At the bottom of the descent, the road climbs again towards Casima, adding one final sustained effort before the route gradually makes its way back towards Mendrisio.
