Lake Ceresio Loop
The Lake Ceresio Loop (also called lake Lugano) is one of the most iconic and accessible cycling routes in the region. Designed for road bikes and free from demanding climbs, this scenic loop follows the shores of Lake Lugano, passing through historic villages, shaded stretches, and some of the most beautiful viewpoints in southern Switzerland.
With a total distance of 55 km and only 270 m of elevation gain, the route can be completed in around 2 hours at a relaxed pace by a moderately fit cyclist. It is therefore ideal for cycle tourists, international travelers, weekend riders, and anyone looking to explore the region without pressure.
Starting point & access
The loop starts and finishes in Mendrisio, at Ciclosprint, a well-known local cycling meeting point and bike shop located next to Mendrisio San Martino train station.
The starting point is easily accessible:
-
by train, including international connections
-
by car, with several public parking garages and lots within a 1 km radius
This makes the route particularly convenient for visitors staying in Lugano, the Mendrisiotto region, or nearby northern Italy.
Route description
From Mendrisio, the route follows the lake clockwise, heading toward the left branch of Lake Lugano (Ceresio).
The first village along the route is Riva San Vitale, known for its pleasant lakeside promenade and historic center. Here you will find the Baptistery of San Giovanni, one of the oldest Christian monuments in Switzerland, dating back to the 5th century—evidence of the village’s importance in Roman and early Christian times.
Continuing along the shoreline, the route reaches Brusino Arsizio, one of the quietest and most scenic stretches of the entire loop. Historically a fishing and trading village, Brusino Arsizio retains a peaceful, authentic atmosphere, ideal for relaxed cycling.
The route then briefly enters Italy at Porto Ceresio, where the scenery becomes distinctly Mediterranean. The lakeside town offers several cafés and is an excellent place for a coffee stop before continuing toward Ponte Tresa.
After Ponte Tresa, the route re-enters Switzerland toward Agno, continuing along the lakeshore to one of the highlights of the ride: Morcote. Often listed among the most beautiful villages in Switzerland, Morcote was historically an important commercial port. Its arcaded houses, stone alleys, and lakeside setting create an unmistakable atmosphere.
The return to Mendrisio follows the Melide dam, a historic infrastructure linking the two sides of the lake. Here, a panoramic cycle and pedestrian path is highly recommended, offering one of the most iconic views over Lake Lugano. Additional cycle paths between Maroggia and Melano further improve safety and riding comfort.

The route offers frequent and well-distributed opportunities to stop, making it especially attractive for international travelers who value experience as much as riding. Coffee stops are located directly along the route and require no detours.
